Global Teach-In – Press Release

Edinburgh represents Scotland in first grassroots ‘Global Teach-In’ focused on building a sustainable economy

How can local communities in Edinburgh respond to an economic crisis that is truly global? How can local groups learn from potentially useful developments taking place half way around the world?

These are the questions we hope to answer by participating in a ground-breaking ‘Global Teach-In’

We will use video link-ups and live feeds to simultaneously connect local communities in 7 nations and across 4 continents.

On April 25, Edinburgh hosts Global Teach-In Scotland at the Augustine Unitarian Church, Edinburgh. A live audience of activists and engaged citizens will gather to respond and discuss a series of live talks and international webcasts that will be beamed from New York, Sweden, and 13 other cities around the world. The Edinburgh group will also be speaking live to a global audience expected to number in the thousands.

At the Edinburgh event, commentator and broadcaster Lesley Riddoch will report on land reform in Scotland, Mike Small, founder of the Fife Diet, will discuss the local food movement, journalist Peter Geoghegan will talk about creative alternatives to the youth unemployment crisis, and final year Ph.D. student, Jamie Hamilton, will discuss the role of groups like Occupy in building a sustainable economy.

Orientation begins at 4.30pm and there is a global kick-off event at 5pm British Summer Time. Local speakers will feature from 6-8pm and the event ends at 9pm. The audience will respond to segments of webcasts and live speakers by posing questions provoked by the case studies and reflecting on ways in which international examples inspire local action. The event is free with donations welcome to cover costs.

April 25th is the first day of the United Nations Conference on International Organization in San Francisco where cities around the world will address concrete solutions to the economic, environmental and energy crises.

This event will highlight the alternative policies needed globally, nationally and locally to constitute a concrete plan of action. Speakers will address the need for not only new tax and budgetary policies, but also the necessity to build new economic institutions from the ground up. These include: alternative banks, utilities, cooperatives and other new economic forms to promote needed economic and ecological changes.

The world’s leading thinkers and activists will be involved in this event, including: Bill McKibben, founder of 350.org (US); Gar Alperovitz, founding Principal of The Democracy Collaborative (US); Colin Hines, Convenor of the Green New Deal (UK); Bruce Nixon, environmental author and activist (UK); Ellen Hodgson Brown, Chairman and President, Public Banking Institute (US); Alice Slater, noted peace and anti-nuclear activist (US); Robert Pollin, a leading economist on green economic transformations (US); Pamela Brown, a leader of the movement against student debt (US); Joel Rogers, a leading green activist (US); Oscar Kejllberg, Former President of Sweden’s leading cooperative bank (Sweden); and Dada Maheshvarananda, a leader of the PROUT movement for economic democracy (Venezuela). Jonathan M. Feldman (Sweden), principal convenor, organized the televised national Green New Deal Conference in Sweden in March 2009 and was a principal organizer of the May 2, 1990 National Town Meeting on the Peace Dividend held in Washington, D.C.

Just Banking

Just Banking Logo We all know it’s time for fundamental reforms to make the banking system serve the interests of society, rather than the other way around.

  • The Bank of England estimates that the total cost of bailing out the UK financial system was £1.3 trillion, more than ten times the entire NHS budget.
How can we handle banking crises without burdening the taxpayer, or better still, avoid them altogether?
  • At present only around 8% of lending by banks goes to productive investment in the sectors that contribute to GDP. The rest goes into property (pushing up house prices) and speculation, including speculation on basic commodities (pushing up food prices for the world’s poorest).
How can we increase the bank finance available for the real economy, and decrease the amount pumped into asset price bubbles?
  • When banks do get around to financing the productive sector, they too often support huge companies with dubious environmental and human rights records, rather than the small businesses that create two thirds of our jobs. Many commentators now argue that banks are failing to support sustainable local economies because they have consolidated beyond the point that allows them to be responsive to local needs.
How can we make high street banks responsive to local needs, including financially excluded groups and small businesses?

The Just Banking conference will bring together leading economists and campaigners to address these urgent questions, and more.

From the minute Occupy Edinburgh found out about the conference we knew we had to help. This kind of frank discussion on the role and future of banking in our society is essential for making any progress toward a better world, free from the financial shackles we find ourselves in.

Members of Occupy Edinburgh have worked tirelessly to help create the logo, the fliers, publicise the event, video and stream the event, as well as set up our own event for those unable to afford the cost of the full day event.

If you would like to join us for the discussion at our ‘mirror’ conference you can. Just come along to the St. Augustine Church on George IV Bridge at 9/9.30am Friday 20th April. If you would like to make a donation to help us cover the costs of this livestream event then please contact occedoutreach@gmail.com

You can also view the livestream on this very website – just click here. We will be covering both the evening lecture and panel discussion and the full day conference (excluding afternoon breakout sessions). The full agenda and timings can be found on the Just Banking website.

You can also get involved on Twitter. Just use #JustBanking in your tweets and they will automatically show up on the livestream chat feed.

Adam Posen, member of the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee, will set the scene with an evening lecture and panel discussion at 6pm on Thursday 19th April.

On Friday the 20th April the University of Edinburgh Business Schoolwill host a full day of presentations and seminars with thought-leaders from the UK and beyond. You can find the draft agenda here and details of confirmed speakers here.

The conference has been organised by Friends of the Earth Scotland and the University of Edinburgh Economics Society, in partnership with UNISONChristian Aid, the New Economics Foundation, the Scottish Trade Union Congress, the World Development Movement and Compass. It has been generously supported by Triodos Bank, the Carnegie Trust, the University of Edinburgh Business School and EUSA.  Q finance are our official media partners.

Make Your Own Movement

This Sunday (5th Feb) we are hosting a full-day workshop at the Abbey Mount Community Center looking at the message, strategy and actions Occupy Edinburgh could take.

It will build upon various other meetings held with Occupy, third-siders, and in small groups around the city.

The schedule for the day will be as follows:

- 10am – 12am – Non-violent communication workshop.   This workshop will introduce a systematic way of communicating peacefully and constructively in large groups.

There is an opportunity to sign-up to an extended NVC training course at a later date and all contributions toward paying for this training would be welcome.

- 12.15pm – 1.15pm – Systems thinking.   This will be a brief workshop looking at how we can discuss the needs and concerns of individuals while keeping the whole picture in mind.

- 1.15pm – 2pm – Lunch.   A workshop on munching of tasty food.

- 2pm onward – A freethinking session. Looking at message, policy, strategy and actions the Occupy Movement in Edinburgh could host or get involved in. There are a few resources we can build on from other meetings, however the agenda will remain loose so we can be as flexible on the day as possible.

- Evening – Pub. The Regent is just across the road and will help facilitate social interaction and further conversation largely through the medium of beer. Of course beer is not essential, just a smile and a chat. But remember: there are very few cash points in the area, so bring cash.

If you would like more information on this event then please email occedoutreach@gmail.com

We look forward to seeing as many of you there on Sunday as possible.

Interested in creating a honest and productive dialogue…even in these tough times? We are.

That is why John from Scotland’s leading business mediation service, Core Solutions, has kindly offered to run, with two colleagues, a 90 minute workshop specifically looking at managing difficult situations.
This interactive workshop will help us to manage our own issues better and also help to move the dialogue to other individuals, companies and politicians. The task of mediating our message in a non-confrontational and honest way is key to dealing with the issues that are affecting us all.

Sunday (13.11.11) Workshops

An inclusive, autonomous, radical space means …
By Rose

This workshop is about talking and thinking about how Occupy Edinburgh can avoid reproducing exclusion and marginalisation. In the wider world we live in, lots of kinds of people and groups are less valued. Through assumptions, language or practices which are very common, they’re made to feel marginalised.

The workshop will involve a facilitated listening exercise in small groups where everyone will be able to articulate their thoughts on space and inclusion. We’ll then move to a facilitated conversation about which methods to employ in order to move towards an inclusive movement, in which all people can feel as safe, comfortable, and valued as possible.

Upcoming Seminar: Philosophy – The Ownership of Consciousness – Thurs 10th 2pm

We have a very interesting philosophy seminar coming up this week on the Ownership of Consciousness.

This seminar will look at the concept of property and to what extent we own our own conscious experience and will be led by Jonny Blomey.

What is consciousness? How do we define and control it? And how much is it created and affected by outside influence?

The seminar will kick-off at 2pm on Thursday afternoon at St Andrew Square. So if you are around and interested then please come along.
